Energy Drinks Pose Serious Health Risk to Kids: Globe and Mail

Energy drinks pose serious health risk to kids: Canadian medical journal

Samm Robbins, 14, enjoys the occasional energy drink but sees it taking hold of people her age who become far to reliant on the beverage's buzz.
Federal minister of health needs to be ‘awakened’ to danger of sky-high caffeine levels

From Tuesday's Globe and Mail
Caffeinated energy drinks are a potential danger to children and need stronger scrutiny from government health officials, warns a new editorial in Canada’s leading medical journal.
The editorial, published online Monday by the Canadian Medical Association Journal, argues that the growing availability of highly-caffeinated energy drinks poses a serious threat to the health of young people who are vulnerable to the effects of caffeine.
“It is time for the federal minister of health to be awakened and alerted to concerns about energy drinks sold to children,” states the editorial, written by Noni MacDonald, section editor of population and public health at CMAJ, Matthew Stanbrook, CMAJ’s deputy editor, scientific and Paul Hébert, editor-in-chief of the journal. “Strict regulations are required if business practices and consumer trends are not curbed.”
Red Bull is one high-profile example of a caffeinated energy drink. But the market for these products has exploded in recent years, meaning there is a growing number of products available that deliver high levels of caffeine to consumers.
Unlike cola drinks or similar carbonated beverages, these energy drinks contain much higher levels of caffeine.
For instance, a 250 millilitre bottle of Coca-Cola contains 26 milligrams of caffeine, according to the company’s web site. But a 75 millilitre bottle of Rockstar “energy shot” contains 200 milligrams of caffeine. A 355 millilitre can of Red Bull contains 113.6 milligrams of caffeine.
Health Canada says children between ages 10 and 12 should not consume more than 85 milligrams of caffeine a day. Healthy adults shouldn’t consume more than 400 milligrams a day, the department says.
“At a minimum, all products with caffeine levels exceeding 100 milligrams should have labels and advertising that carry warnings comparable to those required for caffeine tablets. To minimize use by children, there should be no advertising targeting this vulnerable group,” the editorial says.
Caffeine tablets carry warnings they should not be taken by children and that excessive amounts of caffeine can lead to irritability, loss of sleep, nervousness, and even rapid heart rate.
One of the biggest concerns, according to the authors, is that it’s extremely difficult to tell how much caffeine energy drinks actually contain. While companies print how much synthetic caffeine their drinks contain on product labels, they’re not required to state the amount of caffeine contained in herbal ingredients that are also included in their product.
Red Bull and other companies that sell caffeinated energy drinks did not respond to requests for comment.
Refreshments Canada, an industry association representing beverage makers, issued a statement saying companies that sell caffeinated energy drinks are responsible and don’t engage in marketing campaigns aimed at children. It states that energy drink labels clearly indicate the products should not be consumed by children and that the products have been approved for sale in more than 100 countries.

G20-There is a Simple Solution

If you've been keeping up with the news, you should know that the G20 has just closed.

The G20 took place in Toronto, Canada this year and cost ed a couple billion.
Also going on was protests, where many cars were set on fire and vandalism happened.

The protesters would go as far as jumping out of the sewers to get to where they wanted to be. There was tons of police for riot control, but they never seemed to get it under control.

600 arrests.

A couple billion down the drain.

Toronto closed.
Protesters.

Vandalism.

Injury.

All so 20 of the world's leaders could chat about whatever they want to talk about. If you look at it, there is simpler solutions...Solutions that would stop the protesting and save money.

Idea #1 Fly them all out into some resort in the middle of nowhere that can only be accessed by plane. (Don't alert the media where it is)

Idea#2 Web Conference, have them all sit at home in their own countries and pull out some web cams. This saves A LOT of money and trouble. A computer programmer could set up a private channel for the leaders. This is taking advantage of today's technological world. To quote my friend: "The G20 is stupid, think about it, a terrorist could fly in on a plane and drop a bomb. BOOM! Killing all the leaders." The G20 security cost $1 Billion to keep leaders safe for three days. This is why they should use the web cam idea! But yet again, our government likes to spend money that isn't theirs, getting rid of the "extra baggage"

Instead of spending $1 billion on leaders (Who are already rich) we should spend it on helping OUR own country, getting all the homeless off the streets. Lets fix our country before sending money off to other countries.

The Planets Only Immortal Animal

While checking my mail on Yahoo! I came across this article and thought it would interesting to share!

The planet's only immortal animal is spreading fast

Yahoo! Canada News

A species of jellyfish has evolved the potential for immortality - and they're starting to spread.

The species turritopsis nutricula is able to transform itself from its mature state back into a polyp (immature jellyfish) and then back again - picture a gelatinous 'Benjamin Button' on repeat.

The species, which is only 4-5 mm in diameter, performs this miraculous feat using a process known as transdifferentiation, in which one type of cell transforms into another. While this sounds a lot like what happens in stem cells, the process is distinct.

Turritopsis nutricula isn't the only species to use the technique; salamanders use the process to regrow limbs, while chickens utilize it to repair damaged eyes. Turritopsis nutricula, however, is the only species able to regenerate its entire body.

The entire transformation from adult to polyp takes place very rapidly, helping to explain why it has never been observed in the wild. The process, however, has been observed in the lab, and so far 100 per cent of specimens have been capable of the transformation.

Theoretically, the process can go on indefinitely, which may help to explain why scientists have noticed a spike in the number of these jellyfish in the oceans. "We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion," said Dr Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute.

The jellyfish are believed to have originated in the Caribbean, but, due to the common shipping practice of emptying ballast water in foreign ports, is now found all over the globe.

While the jellyfish can potentially live forever, it's unlikely that one ever will.

That's because like other jellyfish, Turritopsis nutricula is often eaten by other animals and readily succumbs to disease.

Other larger long-lived species have a better chance at reaching impressive ages. Bowhead whales, tortoises and koi fish can all live to be more than 200 years old. Plant species can live even longer. The oldest known bristlecone pine is nearly 5,000 years old.

That isn't stopping scientists around the globe from searching for the secret that allows this unique jellyfish from reversing the aging process. Mastering transdifferentiation could be the key to discovering a real fountain of youth.

From Yahoo News~!

So, they have discovered an animal that has the capability to live forever. Sorry Vampire Lovers, this ability will not be transferred to humans, and the jelly fish CAN live forever but probably won't because there is disease and other animals that like to eat it. Who knows there could be humans eating it hoping to get the Transdifferentiation ability.

A homemade flying saucer-shaped balloon in which it was feared a six-year-old boy could have been trapped has been found to be empty after it landed in a field in Colorado following a desperate chase through the skies.

The silver, car-sized craft reportedly came untethered from the garden of the man who had constructed it. Reports named him as Richard Heene, an amateur science and weather investigator.

It was feared that Heene's son, Falcon, had climbed through an entrance into a small plywood-lined capsule at the bottom of the balloon, which was not designed to carry people, shortly before it drifted into the skies above Fort Collins, a town north of the state capital, Denver, at around 11am local time (6pm BST). Some reports said a sibling had seen Falcon climb in.

As the balloon drifted dozens of miles to the south-west, climbing hundreds of metres into the air, it was pursued by helicopters while emergency crews in ambulance followed its path from the ground.

But after more than two-and-a-half hours in the air, when the helium-filled craft drifted gently to the ground in a ploughed field, rescue workers found no one inside, television pictures showed.

It was not known whether the child climbed into the balloon, and so, whether he might have fallen out in mid air.

There were fears that flights from Denver's international airport could have to be diverted as the balloon began drifting towards its flight paths.

What an Adventure!
